Key takeaways

  • An AI agent is software built on a large language model that understands a goal, plans the steps and takes actions with tools, such as looking up data, booking or updating a record.
  • A rule-based chatbot follows fixed menus and keywords, an AI chatbot answers questions in natural language, and an AI agent also does things in your systems.
  • In Thailand the most practical uses run on LINE OA: 24/7 answers in Thai and English, lead qualification, bookings, order status and owner-side assistants.
  • Agents can still be wrong. They need accurate business data, clear rules, a human handover, PDPA-aware data handling and a budget for usage-based costs.
  • Start with one job on one channel, measure it, then expand.

What is an AI agent? It is software built on a large language model (LLM) that can understand a goal, plan the steps and take actions with tools: look up data, call your systems, book an appointment or update a record. A chatbot mainly replies with text; an agent gets a task done. For Thai businesses in 2026, the most common place to meet one is a LINE Official Account that answers, qualifies and books customers around the clock.

This guide explains what an AI agent is in plain language, how it compares with the chatbots you already know, what Thai businesses use agents for, the risks, and how to start small.

What is an AI agent, in plain language?

Think of three levels of automation:

  • Rule-based chatbot. Follows fixed menus and keywords. If a customer types “price”, it sends the price list. If they phrase it differently, it gets lost.
  • AI chatbot. Uses an LLM to understand free-form questions and write natural answers, ideally based on your own FAQ and product information. It talks, but it doesn’t act.
  • AI agent. Uses an LLM plus tools. Given a goal (“book me a haircut on Saturday afternoon”), it decides which steps are needed, checks your booking system, offers free slots, confirms the booking and sends a reminder.

IBM puts the difference simply: non-agentic chatbots are “ones without available tools, memory or reasoning”, while an agent “autonomously performs tasks by designing workflows with available tools”. In practice, autonomy in a business setting should be limited: you decide which tools the agent may use and when it must ask a person.

Rule-based bot vs AI chatbot vs AI agent

Rule-based bot AI chatbot AI agent
What it does Sends fixed replies to set keywords or menu taps Understands questions and answers in natural language Understands a goal, plans steps and takes actions with tools
Example on LINE Rich menu button sends opening hours Answers “Do you deliver to Nonthaburi and how much?” from your FAQ Checks stock, creates the order or booking, tags the customer and alerts staff
Setup effort Low: built into LINE Official Account Manager Medium: needs a tool plus a clean knowledge base Medium to high: needs connections to your systems, rules and testing
Main risk Customers get stuck when they phrase things differently Confident but wrong answers Wrong answers plus wrong actions, such as a booking in the wrong slot

Why AI agents are suddenly everywhere (2025–2026)

Two things changed. First, language models became good at using tools: instead of only writing text, they can call a function such as “check availability” or “look up order”, read the result and continue. That is what turns a chatbot into an agent.

Second, the big platforms started building for agents. In Thailand, the clearest signal came from LINE. At LINE DEV CONF 2026, LINE’s CTO presented the theme “Agents are the next app layer”, describing chat as a main channel for delivering AI agents to users. According to Thansettakij’s report (19 October 2026), LINE plans a Pioneer Program giving selected partners early access to agent APIs, MCP (Model Context Protocol) and agent-to-agent protocols, plus a closed-beta track at LINE HACKS 2027.

LINE is also adding AI to its business products. Marketing Oops’ coverage of LINE’s 2026 business solutions lists an AI chatbot in the OA Chat Package, and “Seller AI Automation” and a “Customer Data Agent” for MyShop as features in development, without launch dates. What Thai businesses use AI agents for

Most practical uses in Thailand run where customers already are: LINE OA. Here are the jobs agents handle well.

Answering customers 24/7 in Thai and English

Prices, opening hours, branch locations, delivery areas, return policies. Customers type naturally, in Thai, English or a mix, and get an answer at 11 pm instead of the next morning.

Qualifying leads and booking appointments

The agent asks the questions your sales team would ask (budget, location, timing, need), tags the customer and passes a summary to staff. For service businesses such as clinics, salons or car services, it can check free slots and confirm a booking.

Order status and product questions

Connected to your shop or order system, an agent can answer “Where is my order?” or “Do you have this in size M?” with real data rather than a generic reply.

Internal helpers

Not every agent faces customers. Teams use agents to summarise long chat threads, draft weekly reports from sales data or prepare answers for admins to approve.

Owner-side assistants that run the shop from LINE

Some agents work for the owner, not the customer. Our own products are an example. In TellSell (selling online on LINE), the owner sends a photo and a voice message or text in LINE, and the AI assistant writes the product listing, adds the image and updates details such as price or stock. Tellfox (LINE booking, CRM and loyalty cards) has an AI assistant you talk to in LINE by voice or text to update information. In both, the owner confirms before anything changes. More on how this works: run your shop by talking to LINE.

Limits and risks of AI agents

AI agents are useful, but they are not staff you can leave alone.

  • Wrong or invented answers. LLMs can state things confidently that are not true (“hallucinations”). Limit the agent to your own data, tell it to say “let me check with a colleague” when information is missing, and never let it invent prices, discounts or promises.
  • Bad data in, bad answers out. The agent is only as good as your FAQ, product data, prices and policies. Out-of-date information creates out-of-date answers.
  • Clear rules for actions. Decide what the agent may do alone (answer, tag, propose a slot) and what needs a person (refunds, complaints, medical or legal questions, payment problems).
  • Human handover. Customers must be able to reach a person from any point in the chat, and someone must actually respond.
  • Privacy and PDPA. Chats contain personal data. Under Thailand’s Personal Data Protection Act, collect only what you need, explain how you use it, and check where your AI provider stores and processes data. Keep ID numbers, health details and payment data out of the model unless your setup and contracts allow it. This is general guidance, not legal advice.
  • Usage-based cost. Most AI services charge by usage (per message, per conversation or per amount of text processed), so costs grow with chat volume. On LINE, replies to a customer’s message don’t count against your OA message quota, but push messages do, according to LINE Developers. Ask each provider for its current pricing before you commit.
Write the handover rules before you write the prompts. The topics that always go to a person, and how fast they get an answer, protect your brand more than any clever AI reply.

How to start with an AI agent: a five-step checklist

You don’t need a big project. Start with one job and prove it works.

Step What to do Done when
1. Pick one job Choose a repetitive task: FAQs, lead questions or bookings You can describe the job in one sentence
2. Write the rules and data List the top 20 questions with correct answers, prices, policies and what the agent must never do A colleague could answer from your document alone
3. Start on one channel Launch on LINE OA, where most Thai customers already chat The agent runs for a small group or limited hours
4. Measure Track answered vs handed-over chats, wrong answers, bookings or leads created You review conversations every week
5. Expand Add more jobs, tools or channels once the first job is reliable Error rate is low and staff trust it

FAQ

How is an AI agent different from ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a general assistant that mostly works with what you type into it. A business AI agent is connected to your own data and systems, follows your rules and can take actions such as checking stock or booking a slot for your customers.

Can an AI agent work in Thai?

Yes. Current large language models handle Thai and mixed Thai-English well for typical customer questions. Test with real customer messages, including slang and typos, before you launch.

Do I need a programmer?

Not always. Ready-made chatbot platforms and tools with AI built in need no coding. You need a developer when the agent must connect to your own CRM, booking or stock system.

Is it safe under PDPA?

It can be, if you collect only the data you need, tell customers they are talking to an automated assistant, know where the AI provider stores and processes data, and keep sensitive data out of the model. This is general guidance, not legal advice.

How much does an AI agent cost?

It depends on the tool and on usage. Most AI services charge per message, per conversation or per amount of text processed, often on top of a monthly plan, so ask each provider for its current price list and estimate your chat volume.
